While helping our customers recover from fire and smoke damage, we regularly see disasters that could have been prevented. The following are a few helpful tips to prevent fire and smoke damage, and keeping your home and family safe.
HVC Systems
- System maintenance should be checked by a licensed professional every year
- If any breakage or cracks are present, then the equipment should be replaced or repaired
- Filters should be checked and replaced regularly
- Make sure to always keep all flammable objects at least three feet away
Space Heaters
- Portable heaters should never be left unattended and plugged in
- There should be at least three feet in distance between the heater and any potentially flammable objects
- The heaters should never be left on a carpet. They should be kept on a stable surface
Appliances

Lamps
- Never put hats, scarfs, towels, fabric decor, or anything else on top of or around lamps or lamp shades
- Make sure you plug in lamps directly to outlets, never using an extension cord
- Keep lamps at least a foot away from all objects
- Heat lamps should be monitored frequently
Electrical Cords
- Extension cords are designed for temporary use and are not intended to be used permanently
- Make certain that you are using the proper type, size, length, and amperage cords
- Only purchase and use UL (Underwriters Laboratory, Inc.) approved extension cords
- Never run an extension cord under carpet or padding
- Never run an extension cord through the structure of your home
- Never permanently tape an extension cord down
Fireplaces and Wood Stoves
- Fireplaces should be swept and inspected at least once a year to remove soot and debris
- Ashes should be kept in a container 10 feet or more away from any building or structure
- Regular maintenance is recommended, clean routinely with a wire brush
- Firewood should be stored at least five feet away from the fireplace
Candles
- Candles should not be left unattended for any length of time
- Keep candles at least one foot away from all items
- Do not burn your candles all the way down
- Put candle holders on a sturdy, clear, non-flammable surface
- Fans should be off to prevent items such as curtains from blowing toward the flame and catching on fire
- Windows should be closed when burning a candle to avoid any drafts that could carry an ember
Oxygen Tanks
- Oxygen tanks should never be around or near any candles, heaters, or fireplaces
- An oxygen tank or cartridge should never come into contact with oil, grease, or lotion of any kind
- Do not spray air fresheners in households where any oxygen tank or cartridge is present
- Never smoke in or around oxygen tanks or cartriges
